Alex Rodriguez Autograph Baseball Cards

Alex Rodriguez (07/27/75) is a former shortstop who was seen as one of the greatest talents in the game. His CV is legendary, with 14 All-Star appearances, a World Series win in 2009, and ten Silver Slugger awards to name but a few of his achievements over the years.

Despite a number of knee and hip injuries, Rodriguez became the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs, reaching the milestone in 2007. However, he was dogged by PED accusations throughout his career, including the use of HGH.

Derek Jeter joins Rodriguez on the first card to make the list. They were best friends way back when, as the top draft picks in 1992 and 1993 respectively. They broke through in ‘96, and in 1997 appeared together on the cover of Sports Illustrated

The relationship may have soured due to perceived jealousy from A-Rod, but you’ll find them back together again for the purposes of this signed card. Rather than splitting the card in half, images of both players have been superimposed next to each other. Rodriquez is found on the left, with Jeter on the right.

They both have on-card autos filled in blue ink, while the ‘Certified Autograph Issue’ logo is finished with gold chrome trim.

That same combination crops up again, as the former friends signed another card together a year later. Rather than the strength of their friendship, they were likely chosen as the shortstops were two of the most talented players in MLB at the time.

As with the card seen above, the 2000 Stadium Club Co-Signers features images and on-card autos for the duo, with A-Rod on the left, and Jeter on the right. The picture selection makes it look like Jeter is ready to catch Rodriguez’s pitch. It also has a ‘Certified Autograph Issue’ logo which is finished with gold chrome trim.

They both have a good story, although it’s only worth roughly half as much as the version released a year earlier.

2017 Alex Rodriguez Flawless /10 #GDMA-AR (buy on eBay)

2017 Alex Rodriguez Flawless auto card

From the 2017 Flawless Greats Dual Memorabilia Autographs Parallels set, this is another interesting card that solely focuses on A-Rod. The additional space is put to good use, with a premium patch located on either side of an image of the player with a bat held ready.

It’s an understated design, with a simple white background, and logos found at the top and the bottom. The signature is found at the top, which is also where you’ll find the serial number.

Overall, it’s a stunning card, and one of the better options if you’re looking for A-Rod collectibles from more recent years

There’s also a number of hyper rare parallels, including a Gold card limited to 10 copies, and an Emerald version with a print run of just three.

Parallels: Ruby (/20), Sapphire (/15), Gold (/10), Emerald (/3), Black (1/1)

With a base card that has only 10 copies, this is another premium card featuring the Yankees legend. There’s a trio of versions to keep an eye out for, with each one focusing on his time with a different MLB team. This means that there’s a Yankees version, as well as one for the Mariners, and the Rangers.

The landscape design sees Rodriguez on the left, with an on-card auto found just below. There’s also a player patch, found on the right within a boxed segment. The serial number can be found underneath, completing the high-end look and feel. There’s also a further duo of hyper-rare parallels, making it another great choice if you want high-end options.

2020 Leaf Superlative Ken Griffey Jr. / Randy Johnson / Alex Rodriguez /5 #SS3-04 (buy on eBay)

Lastly, we’ve got a triple auto featuring three of the biggest names in baseball. Ken Griffey Jr. needs no introduction, while Randy Johnson is a Hall of Famer who spent 22 seasons as an MLB player.

Each of the trios is given a small section of the card, which has a portrait design. This means that they couldn’t afford to fit body shots, so each players’ head is superimposed onto the card, with a corresponding signature found next to it.

As with the base version, there’s a range of Spectrum parallels that are extremely rare. Leaf cards aren’t always popular with collectors, but this trio of players is more than enough to make a difference in terms of value.

Investment Rating: Buy (4 out of 5)

Best Alex Rodriguez Autographed Card: 2000 Derek Jeter / Alex Rodriguez Stadium Club Co-Signers #CO1

Ownership Disclosure: None

A-Rod is mostly in the news due to his relationship with Jennifer Lopez these days, which is a far cry from his heyday at the top of the game.

His relationship with PEDs dominated the latter stages of his career and led to him being seen as one of the ‘bad guys’ in the sport. He was also suspended for the entire 2014 season for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drugs policy, which is a stain on his career which is hard to erase.

Rodriguez realizes the impact it had in the long-term, as he admits in his own words;

“There are so many frustrating things when you look back at that, number one, you have a guaranteed contract for hundreds of millions of dollars. Literally, you can sit on the couch and get fat. Right? How stupid can you be? … This thing cost me over $40 million. And it cost me my reputation, and it may have cost me the Hall of Fame and a number of other things.”

The lack of a spot in the Hall of Fame is logical considering his part in the Biogenesis scandal, and how he played a part in bringing the game into serious disrepute. It also makes his numbers less impressive, when you factor in the lengths he went to to be number one.

As for his cards, his exclusion from the Hall of Fame has had an impact on the overall values, even when looking at the rarest versions on the market. There’s still a reasonable amount of interest, but prices aren’t as high as you might expect considering his records and his numbers.

The multiple injuries also played a part, as well as a perception that he didn’t win as much as he could have during his time with the Yankees. (Consider Jeter, who won five World Series rings compared to A-Rod’s one.)

In any case, his cards are a decent investment option, and it won’t break the bank if you look at some of the premium signed options on offer.
