It’s easy to identify the best baseball card packs to buy in hindsight, but it’s not especially useful for investors in the here and now.
For example, anything that could possibly contain a rare Michael Jordan card has leaped up in value over the past few years, but it was hard to predict just how popular they would become with collectors and investors over that time period.
Must Read: Best Sports Cards To Buy Now
We’ve come up with a list containing five of the best baseball card packs to buy right now!
Every set contains a couple of hits, and we’ll make a note of the most popular options for each individual release.
Baseball Card Packs to Buy Now
The best baseball packs to buy right now are mostly determined by the chances of pulling a significant hit, as well as their current prices.
For the possibility of finding a gem or two, hobby boxes are a cost-effective method of maximizing your chances, and much will depend on the overall condition of the cards found within.
As with any pack, there are a number of fillers, and the majority of cards will be almost worthless unless you’re looking at ultra-premium options.
Here are five of the best packs to keep an eye on, including some older sets which might have slipped under the radar.
1989 Upper Deck Pack – Chance at Ken Griffey Jr. (buy on eBay)
We’ll start off in 1989, and the Upper Deck Baseball set from that year.
A real game-changer, it featured high-quality card stock, anti-counterfeiting holograms, and an unheard of price of $1.00 per pack.
In 2020, a high-quality box containing 36 packs will cost at least 200 times that amount, but it’ll all be worth it if you’re able to pick up the Ken Griffey Jr. RC that could be contained within.
The Griffey Jr. RC is seen as one of the best in the set, and the most valuable overall. It features a large profile shot of the outfielder, as he grins at the camera in an iconic image.
Of course, as with many late 1980’s sets, there are massive print runs, so you’ll need to find packs that are still in great condition for any chance of pulling a coveted PSA 10 graded copy.
2011 Topps Update Pack – Chance at Mike Trout RC (buy on eBay)
The 330-card base Topps Update set includes rookies, All-Stars, traded players in new uniforms, and season recaps.
We’re nearing the ten-year anniversary of the 2011 Topps Update set, with one clear standout when it comes to the cards inside.
At first glance, it doesn’t appear to be that special, with no chrome or signature, and a simple image of the hitter.
There are 15 versions of the card when accounting for parallels, and they continue to rise in price with each passing year.
In the present day, an unopened box retails for at least $1,500 at auction, and the Trout RC is the undisputed king of the 2011 Topps Update release.
2017 Bowman Chrome Packs – Chance at Ronald Acuna Jr. (buy on eBay)
Heading ever-closer to the present, next up is the 2017 Bowman Chrome release.
As always, there’s a mix of the latest rookies and prospects, with autographed memorabilia for many big names from the year.
Ronald Acuna Jr’s card is the one to look out for, with both signed and unsigned editions available.
The Chrome Prospect Autograph is the most valuable, and there’s a host of parallels for each version.
CPA Parallels: Refractor (/499) (Hobby/Jumbo), Purple (/250) (Hobby/Jumbo), Blue (/150) (Hobby/Jumbo), Green (/99) (Retail), Green Shimmer (/99), (Retail), 70th Bowman (Blue), Gold (/50) (Hobby/Jumbo), Gold Shimmer (/50), Orange (/25) (Hobby), Orange Shimmer (/5), Red (/25) (Hobby/Jumbo), Red Shimmer (/5), SuperFractor (1/1) (Hobby/Jumbo), Printing Plates (1/1)(Hobby/Jumbo)
2020 Bowman Chrome Packs – Chance at Jasson Dominguez (buy on eBay)
The sole 2020 option to make the list, Bowman Chrome is always a popular choice as it offers the first Bowman/Bowman Chrome cards of the season.
We’d look to the Base Chrome Prospect set as it’s always packed to the brim with the latest and greatest in baseball, such as Yankees outfielder Jasson Domínguez.
He was ranked as the top international prospect in the 2019 class, which caused his BCP cards to jump in price.
Top Investment: Zion Williamson Rookie Cards
Domínguez is seen as the next Mike Trout, which is another reason why it’s such a hyped option for collectors.
There are numerous chrome parallels that are worth a significant amount, which we’ll list below.
BCP Parallels: Atomic (Hobby), Base Refractor (/499), Speckle (/299), Purple (/250), Blue (/150), Blue Shimmer (/150), Aqua (/125), Aqua Shimmer (/125), Green (/99) (Retail), Green Shimmer (/99) (Retail), Yellow (/75), Gold (/50), Gold Shimmer (/50), Orange (/25) (Hobby), Orange Shimmer (/25) (Hobby), Red (/5), Red Shimmer (/5), SuperFractor (1/1), Printing Plates (1/1)
2001 Bowman Chrome – Chance at Albert Pujols RC (buy on eBay)
The final pick is the 2001 Bowman Chrome release.
It follows a standard format, as the set is divided among veterans (1-144), prospects (145-165), and rookies (166-330).
As always, there are a couple of solid hits, such as the Albert Pujols card, numbered to 340.
The set introduced the first premium prospect autograph cards to the hobby, which is why it’s remembered so fondly.
The Pujols card has a few rarer refractor parallels, such as the Gold version which has a print run of just 50 copies.
Pujols is slept on in comparison to many of the other players who make the list, and the same is true for the ‘01 Bowman Baseball packs that contain his RC.
The Best 5 Baseball Card Packs to Buy Now: Summary
Whether it be vintage cards or the latest releases, baseball packs are always fun to open.
This is especially true if you manage to pack a player that is actually worth something, but it’s always going to be a bit of a gamble either way.
