Dropping on December 23rd, the second-to-last Topps release of the year comes in the form of the annual Bowman’s Best. This release, much like other Bowman releases, places a heavy focus on baseball’s rookies and prospects from the 2020 season.

2020 Bowman’s Best Baseball Cards: Basics

This set features many of the same elements as the popular Bowman Chrome set just with a bit of presentation and style change.

[irp posts=”6206″ name=”Top 8 Hobby Boxes of All-Time (Ultimate Hobby Box Guide – Updated)”]

In a similar situation as with Chrome, each Hobby Box contains a Master Box which is broken up into two, six-pack mini boxes.

Each pack will contain five cards for a total of 60 cards per box. The Master Box contains four autographs, 12 base refractor parallels, and one atomic parallel.

One of these 2020 Bowman’s Best Hobby Boxes will set you back around 200 dollars. This comes out to be about 16.7 dollars per pack and 3.3 dollars per card.

2020 Bowman’s Best Baseball Cards: Design

2020 Bowman’s Best takes a similar approach as the Topps Finest set replacing traditional photo-based backgrounds with its usage of modern design elements, including an emphasis on lines. This set makes use of the famous chrome stock used in products like Bowman Chrome.

2020 Bowman’s Best Base Set

For the 2020 release, Bowman has decided to split the 100-card base set into 50 rookies and veterans and 50 prospects. There are multiple refractor parallels featured in the set, they are:

  • Purple Refractor – #/250
  • Blue Refractor – #/150
  • Green Refractor – #/99
  • Gold Refractor – #/50
  • Orange Refractor – #/25
  • Red Refractor – #/10
  • SuperFractor – 1/1

2020 Bowman’s Best Autographs

The base signature set of this Hobby Box is the Best of 2020 Autographs insert. These chrome autographs are the main place to find signatures in this product. With a mixture of both rookies and prospects, there is a lot of potentials.

In the same fashion as the base set, these autographs also come in a variety of parallels listed below:

  • Refractors
  • Blue Refractors – #/150
  • Green Refractors – #/99
  • Gold Refractors – #/50
  • Atomic Refractors – #/25
  • Red Refractors – #/10
  • Printing Plates – 1/1
  • Superfractors – 1/1

Dual Autographs

This product also features dual autographs from a pair of players that are limited in their base quantity to just 25. There are, of course, parallels of the dual autographs as well. Limited to only two parallels, they are:

  • Atomic Refractors – #/10
  • Superfractors – 1/1

2020 Bowman’s Best Baseball Card Inserts

Aside from the Best of 2020 Autograph inserts there are four additional designs that can be found throughout a Hobby Box. The first of these is the Franchise 2020 Die-Cuts (1:4 packs).

Trending: Best Wander Franco Rookie Cards

This insert is an homage to a 2000 Bowman’s Best insert and features a shiny mix-colored background with an etched look and rounded corners.

Inverse Color parallels (1:6 boxes) for this insert exist and they are Gold Refractors (/50) and Superfractors (1/1). Autograph variants also exist with their own Gold Refractors (/50), Atomic Refractors (/25) and Superfractors (1/1).

The second insert available in this set is the Decade’s Best (1:18 packs). This design was inspired by the 2012 Bowman International parallel. It features the flag of the home country of the player as the background and was determined by a fan vote. Parallels include Atomic Refractors (1:2 cases), Gold Refractors (/50), and Superfractors (1/1). There are also Autographs (/99) and Autograph Superfractors (1/1).

The third available insert in a Hobby Box of 2020 Bowman’s Best is the Franchise Favorite (1:3 packs). This insert is a throwback to the 2000 Bowman’s Best Franchise Favorite.

The card features a split colored background with a black-and-white silhouette of a player with a player image in the foreground.

Top-Rated Baseball Investment: Ty Cobb Baseball Cards

Besides Atomic Refractors, Gold Refractors (/50), and Superfractors (1/1) for the base versions, there are autographs as well. The autographs feature the same parallels as the previous two insert’s autographs.

The fourth parallel that is in this set is returning from last year. This parallel is the Power Producers (1:6 packs). This card looks back on the rookie seasons of veterans and retired players It features the same bright card design as last year.

Refractors include case-hit Atomic, Gold (/50), and Superfractors (1/1). Autographs are once again available with this insert and feature separate one-of-one Superfractors (1/1).

2020 Bowman’s Best Hobby Box Review

This box has a lot to offer if you are someone who enjoys collecting rookies and prospects. A big plus of this box is that there are four guaranteed autos in this box and the checklist is heavily dominated by the type of player that you would want an autographed card of. Also, the shiny chrome look of this card looks really good and the design is nice. I could see some of the rookie cards in here fairing well down the road.

[irp posts=”5465″ name=”Babe Ruth Rookie Card: Value and Investment Outlook”]

The downside is that often times Bowman’s Best does not hold its value as well as other Topps releases unless it is an autograph or numbered parallel. The inserts in this set are a little lackluster as the only base insert that will most likely have long term value is the Franchise 2020 Die-Cut. This product is essentially an alternative to Bowman Chrome at the same price point, but without the 1st edition cards.

Buy Rating: Buy with Risk (3.5 out of 5)

Bottom Line: For the same price you can get a Hobby Box of Bowman Chrome instead which will hold long-term value a lot better.
